JOB TITLE Talent Search Advisor

The UNT TRIO Programs encourage and assist students from disadvantaged backgrounds in meeting their educational goals of completing a college degree. The UNT Talent Search Program (TS) is one of 5 currently funded TRIO programs at the University of North Texas. TS serves the students in Denton and Gainesville ISDs.

The UNT Trio Department at the University of North Texas is seeking to hire a Program/Project Coordinator I-Talent Search Advisor I to join our team.
The Program/Project Coordinator I will provide workshops and proactive and intense advising and teaching presentations to middle and high school students in the areas of academics, career exploration, financial aid and college enrollment. This person will be responsible for assisting in the coordination of field trips and other events, and maintaining accurate student records/files. This person will serve the students at Denton High School and Calhoun Middle School and will have office space on these campuses.
Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Meeting the goals and objectives of the Talent Search program.
  • Recruiting, selecting and serving students within the TRIO target population.
  • Conducting workshops to meet students' academic and college prep needs.
  • Coordinating field trips, financial aid parent night and other events for students and parents.
  • Providing one-on-one and group advising to students and their parents.
  • Maintaining accurate records within the US Dept of Education guidelines.
  • Assisting with special projects as directed.
  • Working some weekend and evening hours.

The successful candidate will possess a Bachelor's Degree in related field and two years of professional related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:

  • Strong teaching and presentation skills.
  • Strong computer/Microsoft Office program skills.
  • Strong critical thinking, communication and problem solving skills.
  • Strong bilingual speaking and writing skills (Spanish).
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Have reliable transportation and a valid Texas driver's license.
  • Experience in working with TRIO or TRIO-like programs.
  • Experience in working with low-income and first-generation students.
  • Success in overcoming the barriers similar to those faced by TRIO target population.

Promotes the learning community in the Learning Center at a given campus by providing assistance and instructional support to students and faculty.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Provides proactive outreach and academic coaching for students; assists with student support activities.

Presents information to students in one-on-one and group meetings on various aspects of college programs such as course selection, majors, transferability, admissions, financial aid, assessments, career choices etc.

Facilitates student learning strategies in traditional and online courses.

Refers students to appropriate resources (i.e. advising, counseling, tutoring, Student Life, Library Services, etc.)

Documents student interactions in appropriate college systems in a timely manner.

May provide reports and other analytics regarding student interactions in the Learning Center including attendance, academic progress, interventions, etc.

May monitor student progress and assist in the development of ways to engage students fully in the learning progression.

Assists with faculty workshops, activities, and the creation of learning communities in the Learning Center.

Serves as a liaison with various academic departments to ensure support aligns with course/program outcomes.

Serves as an outreach liaison marketing the services provided by the Learning Centers.

Responsible for establishing mentorships with new Academic Coaches and/or Tutors as part of the onboarding process.



To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities listed above. The qualifications listed below are representative of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.



Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s Degree preferred.


One year of related experience in teaching, tutoring, advising, or other student success support areas.

Knowledge of online course practices and procedures.

Knowledge of Developmental Mathematics, Developmental Writing, and/or Developmental Reading.

Knowledge of HCC student services and instructional support services available to students.


Must have knowledge of coaching, instructional, and mentoring techniques.

Knowledge of processes and resources for organizing and leading group and collaborative activities.

Must have effective planning, organization, communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to interact with students of diverse backgrounds.

Must be able to maintain an established schedule, which may include evenings and weekends.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information.

Demonstrated proficiency using computer applications, classroom or other current learning technologies for effective teaching at the community college level.

Experience using standard office software programs and the technology needed to support students at the college level.

Knowledge of online course practices and procedures preferred.

Knowledge of Developmental Mathematics, Developmental Writing, and/or Developmental Reading preferred.

Knowledge of HCC student services and instructional support services available to students preferred.
